A recent report revealed that the application Share it WABetaInfo, a website dedicated to app news, revealed a recent update that now features a new feature, “disappearing” audio notes that can only be heard once.
Voice messages were first introduced in 2013, and since then they have become an essential tool for many users, whether on the go or when traditional text messages are not enough. In 2021, Meta, the owner of the WhatsApp application, was introduced. A “view once” feature for photos and videos means that once the recipient opens the message, it’s gone forever.
The move was seen by some as a big step forward in terms of privacy – meaning photos or videos can’t be forwarded – but feared by others as unnecessarily revealing content being shared and then disappearing.
By adding a “see once” feature to voice memos, users will enjoy the same level of privacy as they can only listen to the message once and not send it to anyone else.
This works both ways, as the person sending the voice memo can’t listen to the recording again—bad news for paranoid users who want to double-check their voice.
Users currently in beta testing are said to be able to try out the feature by tapping the small ‘1’ icon that appears to the right of the voice memo wave icon when recording – the same icon that appears when a photo or video has been sent to view once.
Earlier reports indicated that a View One’s text messaging feature would also be rolled out, but there doesn’t appear to be any further news on when or if the functionality will arrive.
