Washington on Sunday accused Pyongyang of producing biological weapons in Ukraine, reiterating accusations made by Russia and rejected by the United Nations in March.
The North’s official news agency said Washington had “set up a number of biological laboratories in dozens of countries and regions, including Ukraine, in violation of international agreements,” referring to elements “discovered” by Russia.
Moscow’s ally Pyongyang has accused Washington of being an “evil sponsor of bioterrorism that wreaks havoc on humanity” and of waging “bacterial warfare” during the Korean War in the 1950s.
China, North Korea and Russia have made similar accusations in the past.
But Washington has denied this.
Moscow accused Washington in March of funding research to develop biological weapons in Ukraine, which Russia invaded in late February.
Washington and Kiev deny the existence of laboratories in Ukraine aimed at producing such weapons. The U.S. fears that the allegations signal Moscow’s intention to use these weapons in Ukraine soon.
Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, said in March that “the UN is not aware of any biological weapons program in Ukraine.”
In February, Pyongyang said US policy was the “deepest cause of the Ukraine crisis”.
North Korea has officially recognized two unilateral pro-Russian secession zones in eastern Ukraine.
