At a press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Arab Arbitration Council, Lavrov announced that he had discussed “regional and international issues and the situation in Ukraine” with Arab representatives. Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shokri stressed that “Ukraine must seek peaceful solutions to the crisis.”
The Egyptian Foreign Minister confirmed the readiness of the Arab Liaison Committee to make mediation efforts to support the negotiating path between Russia and Ukraine.
Shokri said the mediation efforts were aimed at halting military operations and discussing a number of confidence-building measures.
He said the ways to end the fighting had been discussed with Lavrov, noting that the delegation would travel to Poland to meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba as part of Arab efforts to contain the crisis.
“Our action comes from our awareness of the severity of the crisis in Ukraine and its negative effects on various economic conditions, such as global energy and food security,” the Egyptian foreign minister added.
“We call on all parties to the conflict to stop escalating and to emphasize the need for peaceful solutions based on dialogue,” he said.
The Sputnik news agency quoted Lavrov as saying that he had discussed the files of Yemen, Libya and Syria and the possibility of Damascus returning to the Arab League with the Arab cabinet.
In addition to the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, the foreign ministers of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan and Sudan also included Arab representatives.
Earlier, Ahmed Hafeez, a spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the visit of the Arab Liaison Committee at the ministerial level was coming to Moscow to implement the decisions of the Arab League Council and to hold the necessary consultations and liaison with those concerned. Parties with the aim of contributing to the finding of a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
Within the framework of implementing the mandate given by the League Council, the delegation to Warsaw will leave Moscow on Tuesday morning to meet with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, according to official sources at the League headquarters.
Sources in al-Arabiya and al-Hadat said that the Egyptian-Arab plan to resolve the crisis included an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.
