In a statement before the General Assembly at its seventy-sixth session entitled “Strengthening the United Nations System”, the Government welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution No. 2642 as a compromise solution.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2642 on July 12, extending a UN mandate to bring cross-border aid to Syria for six months only.
The decision was taken after intense negotiations, during which the main debate was “the length of the mandate of the mechanism”.
In a statement, Shad Mather, spokesman for the UAE delegation, said, “The UAE participated in the negotiations in a constructive manner as the ten elected members took a firm and unified position in implementing the mandate of the Council. , this carefully crafted decision reflects the Council’s commitment to respond to humanitarian needs and ensure that relief aid reaches all those in need in all parts of Syria and through all channels.
Mather said: “While we would like to extend this mechanism for twelve months, this decision includes important additions that provide the basis for a long-term and large-scale response to the humanitarian situation, such as the intensification of early relief efforts, including the provision of electricity to Syrians with one of the basic humanitarian needs that have been disrupted.”
