The truth about the “Prayer” video during the Moroccan earthquake that got millions of views

Date:

A video by its publishers on social media of worshipers staying in a mosque and finishing prayers during the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday-Saturday night has garnered millions of views.

Video from a surveillance camera shows a group of worshipers inside a mosque and is monitored as they continue to pray despite power cuts and vibrations.

However, this video was actually taken in Syria a few months ago.

A video has garnered millions of views from several pages on social media, hours after a violent earthquake hit Morocco, killing more than 2,600 people.

According to the National Center for Scientific and Technological Research (6.8 according to the US Seismological Commission), the kingdom is still in the shock of the most severe earthquake, which measured 7 degrees on the Richter scale.

Doctors, volunteers and members of the armed forces have been searching for survivors and recovering bodies from the rubble, particularly in villages in Al Houze province, south of the tourist city of Marrakech in central Morocco, the epicenter of the quake.

Old video from Syria

However, the video of the worshipers has nothing to do with the Moroccan earthquake.

After splitting into static views, a release on YouTube starting February 25, 2023, the search was sent to pages on several news sites and communication sites.

The accompanying caption says it was filmed at Al-Farouq Mosque in Al-Dana city in Idlib, northern Syria, following the “Hadai earthquake” on February 20.

On that day, two earthquakes measuring 6.4 and 5.8 hit northern Syria and the southern Turkish province of Hatay, which was hit hard by the February 6 earthquake that killed more than 45,000 people in both countries.

Elements of the circulating video can be matched with other footage filmed from inside the Al-Farooq Mosque.
