Twenty years after the Taliban were ousted from power in Afghanistan, the movement has returned to power. In 2020, former US President Donald Trump signed an agreement with the Taliban that US forces would withdraw on May 1, 2021. Two weeks before the deadline, new President Joe Biden ordered the complete withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. , At a later date. September 1, 2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

As it began to withdraw, the Afghan National Army collapsed and the Taliban captured the country. Kabul fell on August 15, 2021, leading to the detention of tens of thousands of foreigners in the Afghan capital. The US government has made a concerted effort to evacuate Americans stranded in Kabul by the Taliban’s deadline of August 31.

The withdrawal ended Aug. 30, with about 100 U.S. citizens and about 300,000 Afghans eligible for a visa to enter the United States. He described Biden’s withdrawal as an “exceptional success”, but most Americans disagreed, and Biden’s popularity plummeted. Senior U.S. allies have described the withdrawal as “stupid” and “catastrophic.”

The United States spent about $ 2.3 trillion in Afghanistan during the two-decade war. About 2,500 American soldiers and 4,000 civilian contractors have been killed in Afghanistan. The death toll from the Afghans is about 170,000. It is different now, but the new Taliban government seems to be dealing with the same humanitarian crisis as it did 20 years ago.
