The death toll from a volcanic eruption in Indonesia’s East Java province has risen to 45, an Indonesian official has announced.

Nine people have been missing since the volcano erupted last Saturday, Emergency Management Director Irwin Sobeckty said.

The eruption prompted villagers in Lumangong to flee their homes in panic, while a huge plume of smoke rose into the sky and rocks scattered on the slopes.

The victims were found buried and cremated, but could not be identified.

More than 6,500 have taken refuge in government-provided shelters.

The volcano at Mount Semeru, about 3,700 meters high, located in Promo Tanger Chemeru National Park, has erupted several times since December last year.

It is the highest mountain on the island of Java with a population of 145 million.

Indonesia is located in what is known as the “Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean”, which is known for its seismic activity and contains about 128 volcanoes.
