“It might be big and loud, but we’re not. We’re people who measure our feet and we’re sensitive,” said executive producer Suzanne Mackie at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
Netflix has faced criticism for its lack of historical accuracy. The sixth season of “The Crown” is expected to premiere later this year.
The series, which will conclude with its sixth season, follows the British royal family in the years following the death of Princess Diana, who lost her life in a car crash in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36.
“We had very long and nuanced conversations about how to tell the story of Princess Diana’s death, and I hope that ultimately the public will judge it fairly, but I think it was very carefully executed,” McGee said.
Mackie said Elizabeth Debicki, who played Princess Diana for the past two seasons, was an “extraordinary” actress.
Speaking at the function, he said that the actress is very understanding. He added, “There was a lot of respect from all of us, and that was evident when we watched the final season of the series.”
Series producer Andy Harris said the death of Queen Elizabeth II had “undoubtedly” affected the cast.
Another executive producer on the series, Andy Harris, was asked if Queen Elizabeth’s death had affected the show in any way, and replied: “I think Her Majesty’s death affected all of us and especially writer Peter Morgan. But it’s changed quite a bit, and you’ll know what I mean when you see it. I think so.”
McGee said Morgan told him the show was “a love letter to the Queen.”
The Crown launched in 2016 and will conclude later this year when the sixth season is released on Netflix.
