Spanish newspaper “Sport” revealed a new development in Barcelona’s quest to bring back Argentine star Lionel Messi.
Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires next June and the two sides have not reached an agreement over a contract renewal, in between the player’s return to Barcelona.
According to “Sport” newspaper, Xavi fought from the first minute for Leo Messi to return to Barcelona.
There is still a lot to be done to bring Messi back, especially on an economic level.
But if Messi returns after leaving the club in 2021, Xavi will have everything ready in terms of dressing room.
A few weeks after Xavi was appointed coach of the team, “Sport” confirmed that Xavi began to check Messi’s arrival and communicate with the Argentine star, just as Barcelona president Joan Laporta wanted Messi to return.
Xavi seems convinced that Messi’s arrival will come to fruition, and “Sport” wrote that in a conversation with Messi, the young coach said: “You have only one thing to do in football, leave the club of your life. Good.”
Xavi has already held various meetings with key players at Barcelona to explain his idea of the importance of Messi’s recovery. The most important of these players is goalkeeper Marc-Andre der Stegen, whose relationship with Messi has seen some tense moments.
The newspaper claimed that Stegen had backed Messi’s comeback and was delighted to have the Argentine star back.
The coach spoke to French winger Ousmane Dembele, who believed Messi’s return would be great news for the team’s plans.
Xavi shared the importance of Messi’s return on a tactical level and what the player can add to Barcelona’s attack.
