HomelandJohn Romita Sr., the illustrator of Marvel Comics, best known for his work on “The Amazing Spider-Man,” has died at the age of 93, his son announced Tuesday.
His son John Romita Jr., a videographer, wrote on his Instagram account, “My father, John Romita, passed away peacefully in his sleep this Monday morning.”
He described him as “a legend in the art world and I would be proud to follow in his footsteps (…) he is the greatest man I know”.
Born in Brooklyn in 1930, Romita Sr. worked with Stan Lee (1922-2018), who co-created several Marvel superheroes, including Spider-Man.
Romita Sr. recounted in a 2001 interview with “Alter Ego” magazine, which specializes in comic strips, “I had never read Spider-Man or even knew it existed until Stan came along with several albums and told me he would +. Would you like to try Spider-Man? +”.

According to the interview, Romita Stan Lee also co-created Daredevil, the first superhero drawn by Romita Senor for Marvel.
Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95 in 2018, the same year Spider-Man co-creator Stephen Ditko died at the age of 90.
Like his father, Romito Jr., 55, worked on “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Daredevil.”
Early in her career, Romita Sr. also worked for rival publisher DC Comics.
Superheroes became popular since the birth of “Superman” in the first issue of “Action Comics” in 1938, followed by “Batman” the following year.
