DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Sesame oil has its origins in India, and is also found in Egypt, the Middle East and China. Sesame seeds are pressed to obtain an oil rich in palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid and many other acids used in the production of medicinal and cosmetic products.
According to a report by the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the United States, sesame oil includes several benefits for hair health:
Can prevent hair loss
Sesame oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential fats needed by the body.
A 2017 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information showed that a deficiency of these fatty acids can cause hair loss.
A deficiency of essential unsaturated fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids can result from improper nutrition and absorption disorders in the body.
Hair changes caused by deficiency of these acids include scalp and eyebrow hair loss and lightening of hair color.
Anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial
Sesame oil contains sesamin, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Moisturizes the hair and stimulates its growth
Sesame oil moisturizes the hair follicles and prevents dryness. It promotes hair growth and reduces gray hair due to its ability to penetrate deep into the hair follicles.
Improve scalp health
Sesame oil contains high levels of monounsaturated acetyl groups and natural antioxidants, giving it properties that help soothe and heal the scalp and hair roots.
Precautions for using sesame oil for hair
And the National Health Service Commission in the United Kingdom warned people with sesame allergies that sesame oil could harm their hair. An allergy test should also be done before using on the scalp and hair.
Like other oils, sesame oil can clog pores and irritate the scalp, so it should not be left on the hair and scalp for long to avoid any risk.
