A team of scientists from Argentina claims to have discovered a new giant predatory dinosaur with a large head, but tiny arms compared to its size.
The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Current Biology, said they discovered large skeletons of previously unknown species during excavations in northern Patagonia.
The dinosaur known as “Miraxis gigas” was about 36 feet long and its skull was four feet long, while its arms were only about 2 feet long.
Scientists believe that smaller legs gave carnivores a survival advantage.
“I’m pretty sure the relatively small hands have some kind of function,” said Juan Cana, lead author of the study. “The skeleton shows large muscles and a well-developed chest area, so the arm had strong muscles.”
“They (dinosaurs) may have used weapons for mating, such as grabbing the female during mating or propping themselves up to retreat,” he added. In the event of a fall or fracture.
Peter Makowski, co-author of the study, said the dinosaur’s arms were “half the length of the skull and the animal could not have entered its mouth”.
Makowski said he believes the dinosaurs’ large heads were a key predatory tool, performing functions that arms might have done in smaller creatures.
Miraxis gigas, named after a fictional dragon in the “Game of Thrones” novels, belongs to the genus Carchardon lizards. carcharodontosauridsOr shark-toothed lizards.
These four-ton reptiles are believed to have roamed the earth about 90-100 million years ago.
Two other species – tyrannosaurs and abelisaurids – developed small weapons for similar reasons, scientists say.
