On Tuesday, Russia and Arab and Islamic countries called for an immediate end to the 46-day-old Israeli war in the Gaza Strip.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that this happened during a meeting in Moscow between a delegation of a ministerial group formed following the conclusion of the Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh on November 11 and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The delegation includes Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Jordanian Ayman al-Safadi, Egyptian Sameh Shukri, Palestinian Riyad al-Maliki and Indonesia’s Rinto Marsudi and Organization of Islamic Cooperation Secretary General Hussein Taha.
During the meeting, Lavrov said, “Russia stands by immediate ceasefire efforts and steps to bring humanitarian aid into the Strip to avoid an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.”
He condemned the “collective punishment against civilians in the Gaza Strip”.
In Gaza, about 2.3 million Palestinians live in very poor living conditions. As a result of Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip since the Hamas movement won legislative elections in 2006.
In their speeches, members of the Arab Islamic Committee stressed the “importance of the Security Council and the international community taking effective and urgent steps for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.”
They stressed the “immediate lifting of the blockade imposed on Gaza, the release of prisoners and hostages, and the resumption of a vigorous and fair peace process supported by international legal authorities.”
They also stressed the “importance of allowing the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid, food, water, fuel and electricity to Gaza”.
Since last October 7, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 13,300 Palestinians, including more than 5,600 children and 3,550 women, and injuring more than 31,000, 75 percent of whom are children. and women, according to the government media office in Gaza.
According to official Israeli sources, the Hamas movement killed 1,200 Israelis and wounded 5,431. It captured some 239 Israelis, including high-ranking military personnel, and wants to exchange them for more than 7,000 Palestinian prisoners, including children and women, in Israeli jails.
An Arab-Islamic delegation to the UN aims to build an international consensus to end the war on Gaza. It has toured the capitals of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
Prior to Russia, the delegation began a visit to China on November 18 and held discussions calling for an immediate end to the war.
The five permanent members of the Security Council are China, Russia, the United States, France and Britain.
