On Friday, Republicans in the US House of Representatives began taking initial steps to impeach President Joe Biden, accusing him of abuse of power and failing to fulfill his duties as president of the United States.
A bill was passed to begin an investigation into allegations against Democratic leader Biden and his family and to refer the allegations to the House Homeland Security and Judiciary committees.
The vote was on a one-party basis, with 219 Republicans voting in favor and 208 Democrats voting against the bill.
If both groups vote to initiate a formal impeachment vote in the House of Representatives, the House will officially begin voting on the bill.
The U.S. Constitution says that a president can be impeached and removed from office for “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
In contrast, senior Democrats argued that the actions of House Republicans this week show that the GOP is supporting “MAGA extremism” (Make America Great Again) and Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Republicans voted for California Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff, one of Trump’s fiercest critics, for his role in the investigations into the former president.
“House Republicans are focused on their extremism, their conspiracy theories and their pandering to Donald Trump,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters Thursday.NBC NewsAmerican.
