Sotheby’s announced Saturday that the famous red wool sweater printed with a group of white goats on black, worn by Diana Spencer after her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981, will be auctioned at the end of August.
The sweater will be among several pieces offered in an online celebrity-themed auction by Sotheby’s in New York from August 31 to September 14.
The “Black Goat” sweater was priced between $52,300 and $91,600.
The piece was designed by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, who founded their brand Warm and Wonderful three years ago.
A few weeks after the pictures of Diana wearing the sweater were published, Muir and Osborne received a letter from Buckingham Palace saying it had been damaged by the future Princess of Wales, and the royal letter asked the designers if it could be repaired. Secure a replacement.
In fact, the owners of “Warm and Wonderful” made a new version of the sweater, and they received a letter of thanks from the personal secretary of the future princess.
In 1983, Diana, Princess of Wales, wore this sweater again with elegant white jeans.
Nearly 40 years later, Rowing Blazers brand manager Jack Carlson suggested that the two prominent designers form a partnership with him and claim a patent for the famous sweater’s design.
And Sotheby’s noted that consumer demand for it was high, and saw it as a symbol of the perpetuity of Diana’s taste and her influence on popular culture.
As for the first damaged sweater worn by Diana, Joanna Osborne found it in a box in her shop in March 2023.
And “Sotheby’s” said that “an in-depth examination of the condition of the sweater, damage to its sleeves and comparison with images from 1981″ confirmed that it was the original sweater worn by Princess Diana. 40 years ago.”
