A senior U.S. military official said Friday that Ukraine’s air defense was committed to capturing the country with Russian occupation.
“They have about 56 fighter jets on the ground, which is the majority of their fleet,” the official told reporters anonymously.
He explained that the Ukrainian Air Force makes about five to 10 aircraft a day, while the Russian plane flies over 200 planes a day, and the Ukrainian side is more focused on defending itself from the ground.
The official described Ukraine’s strategy as “effective” and “creative”.
The US government recently rejected a proposal by Poland to supply MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine via a US base in Germany.
Washington said providing such fighters during the conflict was too risky and called into question the effectiveness of such an operation.
“We do not oppose any other country that wants to send planes to Ukraine. This is a sovereign decision that another country can take,” the U.S. official added.
