On her 85th birthday… Who is Queen Sonja of Norway?

Yesterday, July 4th, was the birthday of Queen Sonja of Norway, wife of King Harald. The Norwegian Royal House account has released three images of the Queen to celebrate her birthday. On this occasion, we take a look back at the Queen’s life and some of her achievements as Queen of Norway.

Queen Sonia’s Upbringing and Education

Sonia Haraldsson was born and raised in Oslo, the youngest daughter of clothing merchant Karl August Haraldsson and his wife Dagne Haraldsson. She has three older brothers; Two brothers and one sister.
Rani received a diploma in tailoring from the Oslo Vocational School, and a diploma from the Vocational School in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she studied accounting, fashion design and social sciences. After studying in Switzerland, he returned to Norway and earned a BA in French, English and Art History at the University of Oslo.

Queen Sonia’s relationship with King Harald

Queen Sonia married then-heir Harald in March 1968. The crown prince made it clear to his father, King Olaf V, that he would remain celibate for the rest of his life unless he married him.
With King Harald, Queen Sonia has two children; Princess Martha Louise and the future King of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon.

Queen Sonia’s Role in the Royal Family

Soon, Sonia established herself as an important part of the Norwegian royal family and took on royal duties that included traveling extensively in Norway and abroad. In 1972, she co-founded the Princess Martha Louise Fund, which provides aid to children with special needs in Norway. From 1987 to 1990, Crown Princess Sonia was Vice-President of the Norwegian Red Cross. He was responsible for the organization’s international operations. He was part of the Red Cross mission to Botswana and Zimbabwe in 1989.
After the death of King Olaf V on January 17, 1991, Sonja became Norway’s first queen in 53 years.
Rani has always been interested in art and is a highly respected artist who has exhibited her art in Norway and abroad. The Queen has also focused on the role of women in Norway, and last month, the Queen gave a speech in which she expressed her desire to have more female leaders in Norway.
In November 2016, Queen Sonja’s childhood home was moved from Oslo to Mayheugen in Lillehammer, where the house was built and displayed at the Mayheugen Museum. The villa dates from 1935, and due to development in the area, the house had to be demolished. However, in order to preserve the house and its historical value, it was agreed to convert the house into a museum.
