Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced the extension of the “Michelangelo Pistoletto, Louvre + 1, Mirror Paintings” series until May 15.
On the fifth anniversary of its opening, the museum invited the famous Italian artist to show a series of glass paintings inspired by his exhibition, which he did in 2013 at the Louvre Museum in Paris, “The First Year, Heaven on Earth.”
The artist decided to create new glass paintings that combine images of visitors and old sculptures, helping to create a direct relationship with the works on display. A series of 11 mirrors are on display in the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s permanent exhibition halls. Starting a conversation from one Louvre museum to another, you interact with his art collection.
Most of Pistoletto’s glass paintings are based on a set of contrasts: between past man and present man, between a naked body and a clothed body, between flesh and another stone.
The series “Michelangelo Pistoletto, Louvre + 1, Mirror Paintings” allows us to depict three times overlapping: the past (photograph), the present (reflection in the mirror) and the future (the image becomes a memory of a moment. Imitating all moments). These temporary works of art are iconic images that make Louvre Abu Dhabi a mirror of humanity and a meeting place that embraces all ages and civilizations.
This collaboration is the second collaboration between Louvre Abu Dhabi and Michelangelo Pistoletto. His previous show included a temporary installation called The Labyrinth, a giant maze made of zigzag strips of corrugated cardboard.
This work participated in the exhibition “Paper Tales and Secrets” held from April 20 to July 24, 2022.
