Regular nut consumption was found to be associated with a 4.3% decrease in the total number of LDL particles and a 6.1% decrease in small LDL particles, both of which were associated with a reduced risk for heart disease.

In addition, the researchers found that medium-density lipoprotein, or IDL, cholesterol, the precursor to LDL, was reduced in the group eating daily walnuts, while LDL cholesterol in the same group differed by sex.
