ATLANTA, USA (CNN) – US President Joe Biden on Thursday dismissed concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin might use nuclear weapons amid signs of turmoil in Russia following last month’s failed uprising by the Wagner group.
“I don’t think there’s any real possibility that Putin will use nuclear weapons, but nobody knows what could happen,” Biden told CNN anchor Arlette Sines at a news conference in Helsinki, Finland, on Thursday. “Not only the West, but China and the rest of the world have said: “Don’t go for that option, don’t go for that.”
The US president expressed his opinion on the future of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner’s leader, after the rebellion, as Prigozhin’s whereabouts are unknown despite meeting with Putin after the rebellion.
Biden joked: “I think only God knows what happens to Prigozhin, because only God knows what happens to him, I’m never sure, we don’t know where he is, what relationship he has. If it were him, I’d be careful with what I eat. .” I will look carefully at the menu.”
And Biden continued: “Who knows? Just kidding? I don’t know. I don’t think any of us know what the future holds for Prigozhin in Russia, so I don’t know how I can answer that question. And.”
Asked if he believed Russia might interfere in the upcoming presidential election, Biden indicated that such efforts were already underway.
And the US president said: “First of all, they’re already meddling in the US election, so it’s not a new thing, they did it last time, they tried.”
