Biden’s government accuses Russia of anti-Semitism and exploitation of Jewish suffering
WASHINGTON (JTA) — In stark terms, the Biden administration is poised to accuse the Russian government of being anti-Semitic and exploiting Jewish suffering through its claims that its war against Ukraine is a “dishonest act.”
“For its own predatory purposes, the Kremlin is exploiting the suffering and sacrifices of all those who lived through World War II and survived the Holocaust,” the US State Department said in a lawsuit appearing on its website today. “In the process, the Kremlin is undermining important global efforts to combat anti-Semitism, instead spreading an insidious form of anti-Semitism, a distortion of the Holocaust.”
The case, previously obtained by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, appears on a special page titled “Neutralizing Disinformation” dedicated to exposing Russian disinformation in the war against Ukraine.
An informal session of the United Nations Security Council is scheduled for this afternoon, which has called for Russia to strengthen its denials. To Western colleagues who have expressed skepticism about identifying Nazism as one of the main targets of a special military operation in Ukraine and saying we are exaggerating the problem.
The State Department document lists historians and Holocaust memorial institutions, including Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Israel, and the United States Holocaust Museum, who defend the Holocaust libel charges.
A three-page document confirms that Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Slansky, is Jewish and has lost family in the Holocaust. It includes a picture of Zeleski in the dome surrounded by Orthodox Jews at the Western Wall in Jerusalem during the 2020 Advent.
“The Kremlin falsely claims that the worst Nazis were actually Jews and tries to downplay the role of anti-Semitism in Nazi ideology,” the file read.
The document refers to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s scandalous claim, in May, that Jews are “the greatest anti-Semitism of the Jews themselves.” He cited Israeli sources that condemned Lavrov’s statements.
The document concludes with the statement that Russia is harming the fight against anti-Semitism. “With global anti-Semitism on the rise, Russian disinformation of a particularly damaging kind is imperative for everyone to read,” the report said.
