The French president on Wednesday called on Europe to show “solidarity” in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The French president added that Thursday’s summit was aimed at “showing that we are united” and that “the European family is united”.
He emphasized that the situation in Ukraine was “very dangerous” because many expected President Vladimir Putin not to stop there, and that the crisis would witness new developments.
The presidency added that “there is a risk that President Putin may decide to test Westerners in their vicinity: the Balkans, Bosnia, Transnistria, the Caucasus.” We want each of these countries to realize that a choice must be made and that the alliance with the EU needs some clarity.
According to the Elysee Palace, the European Union is prepared to impose sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine while examining the possible consequences for the economy and immigration.
On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Gelensky and other leaders before leaving for Brussels.
Ukraine has received military support from NATO, including anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank missiles and helmets, which the West has accused of mobilizing 150,000 troops along the Moscow border.
But advisers to the French president said diplomacy was the answer.
One of these advisers said, “Considering the balance of power, the supply of military equipment will not allow Ukraine to stand up to Russia”, a “diplomatic solution” and an attempt to “block” Russia.
