Fans took to the field after Saint-Etienne was relegated to Ligue 2 after losing to Axer on penalties in Sunday’s play-off match.

In the second leg at St-Etienne’s Gauvreux Gichard, the two teams were tied at 2-1, before Axer won 5-4 on penalties.

Only Algerian midfielder Riad Boudebouz missed a penalty kick in Saint-Etienne.

French media reported that police fired tear gas to disperse the fans and that the players returned to the dressing room after some fans entered the stadium and threw firecrackers from the stand.

When they lost to Monaco 4-1 in April, fireworks exploded on the stand, forcing Saint-Etienne to play without its fans earlier this month, disrupting the game for almost half an hour.

Auxerre was replaced by Saint-Etienne in the first division, along with Toulouse and Ajaccio, while Metz and Bordeaux were relegated to the second division.
