On the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on Wednesday.

The Turkish Presidential Communications Department said – in a statement – that both sides agreed to implement multiple communication channels between the two countries, and the foreign ministers of both countries indicated in the statement that the meeting took place in “good conditions”. The report indicated that Erdogan and Mitsotakis agreed to hold a high-level cooperation council meeting between the two countries in the Greek city of Thessaloniki next fall, with foreign ministers from both countries appointed to lead the forum and deliver reports. Progress has been made.

Both sides emphasized their intention to hold frequent contacts at all levels in order to create an atmosphere of trust and an appropriate atmosphere for the improvement of Turkish-Greek relations.

Greece’s prime minister – confirmed ahead of the meeting – was making “solid progress” with the aim of rapprochement with Ankara.

“I hope and impatiently wait to seize this positive situation and make concrete progress,” Mitsotakis said before the meeting, which comes after heightened tensions following the reconciliation between the two countries after the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey in early February.

“Of course we have big differences, but we can agree on a road map to resolve the biggest geopolitical dispute and define maritime boundaries, exclusive economic zones and continental shelves in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean,” he added.

Tensions between the two countries eased last February when Greece sent aid and rescue teams, and then Greek Foreign Minister Nicos Tendias visited the affected areas.
