ABU DHABI, 26th February 2020 (WAM) — Belgium’s Remko Evenpole was crowned champion at the fifth edition of the Emirates Tour, the Middle East’s only global race organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
Covering 7 stages covering a total distance of 1028 km, the race was attended by 140 cyclists representing 20 professional teams and culminated today at the Jebel Habeed summit in Al Ain.
Even though Emirates rider Adam Yates of Great Britain won the final stage in Al Ain at 153 km, Evinboel won the Tour title in favor of him.
Before crossing the finish line at the top of Jebel Hafeed in the final kilometers, he beat Evenpool by only ten seconds, completing the race distance in 3:29:42 hours and third in the overall standings. Enos Grenadier team rider Australian Lucas Plab came in second in the overall points standings.
Evenpole, a rider of the Southall Quick Step team, won two jerseys at the end of the race, wearing the red jersey sponsored by the leader (International Holding Company) in the general stages of the race, and the white jersey. Best Young Cyclist Under 23 by (Al Naqil Company).
Tim Merler (Italian Trade Agency) won the sponsored green jersey, and Belgian Edouard Blanchard, leader of the middle-speed stage, held the black jersey (sponsored by Abu Dhabi Experience) for Ibelson’s rider. Deconik Group.
The Emirates team won the title of the best team in this Emirates tour.
