Some videos have gone viral on “Tick Tock”, which aims to provide tips for whitening teeth at a lower cost, but it can cause “irreparable damage” according to a dentist.
Teeth whitening can be expensive, which is why many users of the video sharing site TikTok have begun to share low-cost home remedies. While being pearly white on a budget may seem like a dream come true, some trends can have a devastating effect on your oral health.
According to dentists, these tendencies can cause more harm than good over time, causing “irreparable damage” by repeated use of seemingly harmless products.
Here are three teeth whitening trends of “Tick Tock” that can always be harmful to your oral health:
Banana peel whitens teeth
This strange process sees users rubbing the inside of an open banana skin directly into their teeth. According to users, it can provide quick and easy shine.
However, a licensed dentist is a doctor. Paul Springs said: “The theory of tooth whitening is that banana peels are high in potassium and magnesium, which can peel and stick to teeth, but there is no evidence that it is effective.”
Springs added: “The theory is that strawberries whiten teeth because of their acidity, acid cleans stains, but the acid does this by eating the enamel that protects your teeth, so this is a very bad way.”
– Soda bicarbonate
Baking soda, also known as baking soda, is welcomed as an ingredient suitable for all types of applications around the house.
In addition to carpet cleaning and deodorant, it is also used in home beauty treatments.
TikTok user Eatwithlew shared a video of him mixing baking soda with toothpaste, saying it “works well” for whitening strips.
When baking soda improves the color of your teeth, Dr. Sphinx points out, it is not a wise decision over time.
He said, “Most of the time, it is safe to whiten teeth with a paste of baking soda mixed with water, but you should not use it too gently and too much. It is a way to remove stains. Do not use soda directly on the teeth. “
Hydrogen peroxide
Although hard to believe, some Dictac users have already begun to use hydrogen peroxide on their teeth, a colorless liquid chemical often used as an antiseptic and bleach.
This chemical also has luminous properties, which is why it is included in many blonde hair dyes.
However, the 18-year-old TikTok user went a step further and rubbed his teeth with peroxide to whiten them.
As a result it has garnered more than 12.4 million views, and despite its popularity, Dr. Adrian Hedrick of Longmont Dental Loft insisted that people should not.
“When it comes to hydrogen peroxide, it has strong and high concentrations that can be harmful to the gums. If you use low levels of hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash or toothpaste inside, it’s completely safe,” he said.
