Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that US President Joe Biden has not decided who will be in power in Russia and that only Russians should choose their president.
Responding to Biden’s statements in a speech in Warsaw, Peskov said: “It is not up to Biden to decide … the Russians will elect their own president.”
“For God’s sake, this man cannot be in power,” Biden said in a speech in Warsaw on Saturday without naming the Russian president, although he did so elsewhere during his speech.
Shortly afterwards, a senior White House official tried to clarify that the US president’s comments were not a direct call for Putin’s ouster.
“The president’s opinion is that Putin should not be allowed to wield power over his neighbors or the region,” the official said. He did not discuss Putin’s rule or regime change in Russia.
