Tottenham Hotspur coach Antonio Conte has ridiculed him for saying he had to spend money to harvest the trophies.
Conte took charge at Spurs three weeks ago and has already made it clear he has reservations about how far his side can go.
The British news agency “PA Media” announced that the Italian coach was close to coaching the team in the summer, but negotiations stalled after it was pointed out that Conte was asking for a large sum.
But the 52-year-old, who has won with Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan, says Romelu Lukaku is the only player he has ever heard of.
“It makes me laugh,” Conte said in an interview with the Gazette Dello Sport. “At the end of my career I bring money, not spend it.”
He added: “Mostly I coach young players, players who have been neglected or restructured, players who have not won until then.”
“I have reassessed all the players, thank you for my work. In my career, I was told to only contract the highest paid player,” he stressed.
