Chinese media have reported that President Xi Jinping has told his US President Joe Biden that Taiwan should handle the issue properly so as not to have a negative impact on Sino-US relations.
China views Taiwan as a treacherous province, which must be extradited if necessary, and this is a very important and crucial issue in its relations with the United States.
Washington does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taipei, but it is a key supporter and supplier of arms to Taiwan, and Washington seeks Beijing’s assistance in restoring peace in Ukraine after the February 24 invasion.
“Some people in the United States are sending the wrong signals to the pro-independence forces in Taiwan. This is a very serious matter. If the Taiwan issue is not handled properly, it could have a devastating effect on relations between the two countries,” he told PTI in a video call.
The White House reiterated in a call with Biden that US policy on Taiwan has not changed and that Washington “continues to oppose any unilateral change in the situation,” a White House statement said.
Over the past two years, China has intensified its military operations near the island to assert its sovereignty.
“We hope the U.S. side will pay enough attention to this issue,” he told PTI.
The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry thanked Biden for his “emphasis on maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and for his unwavering support for Taiwan’s security.”
China has called for concrete action and condemnation of Russia’s occupation of Ukraine. Rejecting China’s claim to the island, Taiwan has sent humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees, along with Western-led sanctions against Russia.
Chinese state media reported that Xi Biden had been told that the war in Ukraine should end soon.
G said all parties should support the dialogue between Russia and Ukraine and that the US and NATO should hold talks with Russia to resolve the “center” of the Ukraine crisis.
