“Fright Night” details
- A gunman on a motorcycle wearing an orange jacket fired at least four times with a machine gun.
- The shooting happened near Saint-Denis Square in the northern districts of the Belgian capital.
- The attacker sparked terror after releasing two video clips in which he took responsibility for his crime and spoke in Arabic.
- A spokesman for the Belgian Federal Public Prosecution told reporters that two people died and another was injured in the accident.
- The spokesman hinted that the attacker may have been motivated to do what ISIS did, stressing that “this incident has so far had nothing to do with the situation in Israel and the Middle East.”
- Belgium raised its security alert level to the highest level after the incident.
What do we know about the attacker?
- French website BFMTV reported that the suspect was of Tunisian origin and was staying illegally in Belgium.
- The source explained that hours after the incident, the attacker was still not arrested (as of 5 am local time).
- Belgian website Le Soag has identified the driver of the accident as Abdel Salam, a 45-year-old resident of Brussels.
- In the evening, security forces raided and searched his house in the Sherbeek area, the source said.
- In the viral video, Abdel Salam claims to be from ISIS.
- The suspect killed two Swedes and injured a taxi driver, who is in a stable condition.
Macron condemns… and France steps up surveillance
- French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack: “A few minutes ago, Brussels was subjected to a new terrorist attack, which apparently claimed the lives of two other Europeans, two Swedes.”
- Macron added, “Our European continent is shaken.
- Following the incident, French Interior Minister Gérard Dormanin ordered enhanced surveillance measures along France’s borders with Belgium, a French Interior Ministry source said Monday night.
