Aerial photographs reveal Rome-sized ice sheet collapse in Antarctica

Satellite images revealed the collapse of an ice sheet the size of Rome AntarcticaIt saw days of recorded temperatures.

Scientists say everything left of the Conger Glacier turned to ice last week.

It came during Antarctica. AntarcticaThe temperature is 4 C higher than usual, where new logs are set and above the melting point.

Concern for science

The Arctic is also experiencing higher-than-normal temperatures, which scientists are concerned about, noting that it is “unusual” for both poles to melt at the same time.

Scientists have discovered that the Conger ice sheet collapsed as temperatures rose in Antarctica last week.

For its part, the U.S. National Ice Center confirmed that a glacier was born from a rock in Wilkes Land, and that its dimensions are 1,200 square kilometers – the size of Rome.

U.S. scientists point out that the glacier “contains almost everything remaining in the Conger ice sheet.”

The U.S. National Snow Center pointed out that the process of forming ice sheets in the Conger occurred last Thursday.

Hot

The next day, Antarctica as a whole was 4.8 degrees Celsius warmer than the center temperature between 1979 and 2000, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Walt Meyer, an iceberg expert at the National Snow and Snow Data Center in Colorado, USA, explains, these temperatures are unusual – already above average.

In February, the amount of ice in the Antarctic Ocean – the amount of ice covering the ocean at a given time – reached 830,000 square miles, which was almost 30% lower than average.
