Peruvian police found a 600- to 800-year-old mummy in a cooler bag for food distribution over the weekend.
told the Police Network, “CNN NewsOn Saturday afternoon, the mummified remains of three men were found in an abandoned park in the Peruvian city of Puno.
Marco Antonio Ortega, the city’s local police spokesman, said the mummy was found with a 26-year-old man carrying a bag for one of South America’s popular food delivery apps.
Pictures show the mummy found inside a red delivery bag with the fetus inside.
Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, confirmed he named the remains “Juanita” and described the mummy as “like his spiritual friend,” AFP reported.
He said: “I take care of her at home, she is in my room and sleeps with me,” AFP reported.
On Tuesday, a government official told AFP that the accused would remain in custody while investigators look into the case.
On Monday, Peruvian news agency Andina reported that the mummy had been classified as a national cultural property and was now under the protection of the Ministry of Culture.
Peru contains hundreds of archaeological sites for many civilizations that arose before and after the Inca Empire, and many mummies have been found in the country before.
In 2021, CNN reported that archaeologists discovered an 800- to 1,200-year-old mummy at a site near the capital, Lima.
