Agence France-Presse quoted military sources as saying that 300 mercenaries and foreign fighters fighting in the ranks of the “Libyan National Army” led by Khalifa Habdar were expected to be removed from Libya at France’s request.
The agency said in a statement that the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, loyal to Haftar, would remove “the first batch of 300 mercenaries and foreign fighters” from Libya “at the request of France.”
Haftar’s military said in a statement that it had decided to leave the country “as part of a” practical effort “to ensure that” direct coordination with the United Nations mission takes place during the process of transferring fighters to their countries. “
The announcement comes ahead of an international conference in Paris on Friday aimed at coordinating efforts to restore stability in Libya.
Since the overthrow of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has seen a series of political and military crises that have centered on the conflict between the two parallel centers of power at the time, the national government. The Faisal al-Sarraj-led agreement in Tripoli with the support of Turkey stationing forces in Libyan territory and the government of Abdul-Sisi in alliance with the commander of the God Al-Thani Libyan National Army in Dobruk supported the agreement. In October 2020, both sides reached a ceasefire agreement and paved the way for progress in the political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
As part of these efforts, the Libyan Political Dialogue, comprising 75 politicians representing three regions of Libya, on February 5 elected a new executive council headed by Abdel Hamid al-Tabaiba, head of the United Government. Mohammed al-Manfi is the chairman of the Presidential Council.
