The four-hour show “Heritage” and music by Moulin Rouge “The Red Mill” won the Tony Awards on Sunday, promoting a return to live theater and calling for better opportunities for black writers and artists.
“Looks like home tonight, the lights are on, we’re here, we’re back,” said host Adra McDonald.

“Moulin Rouge” music, based on the 2001 film, won 10 awards, including Best Music and Best Actor for Aaron Tweet.

Co-producer Carmen Pavlovic said that every show needs an award after 18 months of imprisonment, “take a show that started, shows that never started, shows that almost started and shows that stopped and luck reborn.”

The play “The Heritage”, which depicts the life of homosexuals in the 21st century, won the Best Music Award, among other two.

Puerto Rican playwright Matthew Lopez said: “This is the 74th Tony Award, the first Latin writer to win in this category. It must change. We are a vibrant community, we have many stories. She longs for us in and out.”

Soldiers’ play about the assassination of a black soldier at a U.S. military base in 1944 won the best replay of “A Soldier’s Play.”

“The list has to be big,” said director Kenny Lyons, who said Broadway should do better to raise black voices.

A Christmas Carol, a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel, “A Christmas Carol” won five awards.

Emerging actress Adrian Viren won the Best Actress award for her role as rock singer Tina Turner in the film “Tina-The Tina Turner Musical”.
