Emirates signs nuclear deal with world’s largest uranium producer

Yesterday, Emirates Nuclear Corporation announced that it had signed the first commercial agreement for the supply of uranium fuel with Kazakhstan’s national nuclear company “Kazadoprom”. The agreement paves the way for new areas of future cooperation between the two sides, and supports the strategy pursued by the Emirates Nuclear Corporation since the beginning of the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Togayev signed the agreement during an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, during which representatives of Kazakhstan’s National Nuclear Energy Company participated in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention. Climate Change (COP28), was signed in the presence of officials from both countries during the conference.

The deal is of strategic importance, as Kazakhstan is the world’s largest uranium producer, as it has approximately 12% of extractable uranium resources, and produces 40% of the world’s uranium, as 42% is extracted. The world’s uranium in 2022.

Cooperation with American “Terapower” to develop nuclear “technologies”.

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with TerraPower, an American company specializing in innovations in the nuclear energy sector, aimed at joint cooperation in the field of developing applications of advanced technologies in this sector. Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Deputy Managing Director of Research and Development at Emirates Nuclear Corporation and Chris Lavesque, CEO of TerraPower, signed the agreement on the sidelines of the COP28 conference. CEO of Emirates Nuclear Corporation, Mohammed Al Hammadi and Chairman of TerraPower Board of Directors, Bill Gates.

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and TerraPower will collaborate in various areas, including technical design and commercial feasibility, to develop the “Natrium” technology invented by the American company in both the UAE and the United States.

The technology will primarily be used to produce carbon-free electricity, along with non-conventional applications of nuclear power that include hydrogen production.
