Chinese stars return to Taiwanese festival with “Pineapple”.

Yesterday, actress Hu Ling became the first Chinese film star to walk the red carpet at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.

Chinese director Huang Jie also attended the ceremony with her Japanese husband Ryuji Otsuka. The duo won Best Picture for their co-directed social drama “Stonewalling.”

“After winning the Golden Horse Awards, we can go further into the wild world and move forward steadily,” Huang told attendees at the ceremony. “I am especially grateful for the Golden Horse Awards.”

Actress Hu Ling, nominated for Best Actress for her role in “Carp Leaping Over Dragon’s Gate,” was given a red carpet welcome. Dressed in bright clothes and holding a pineapple, she was accompanied by Chinese director Yan Xiaolin and some film actors.

“The (Chinese) name of our film is ‘Pineapple,’ and Taiwanese viewers told me that pineapple means good luck in Taiwanese culture,” Hu said.

However, she lost to 12-year-old Audrey Lain for “Trouble Girl,” making her the youngest Best Actress winner in the festival’s history.

Taiwan’s Hsiao Yachuan won best director for the family drama “Old Fox,” while his compatriot Wu Kang Ren won best actor for his portrayal of a mute man in Malaysian film “Abang Adik.”

The Best Short Documentary Award went to “The Memo,” a video diary about the epidemic made by a filmmaker couple isolated in a small apartment in Shanghai.

The presence of representatives from mainland China was a breakthrough compared to previous years. In 2022, Chinese star Xia Liu, who was nominated for the best actress award for the Hong Kong-made crime film “Limbo”, did not attend the ceremony without explanation.

But last year, Chinese director Huang Shuli, in a rare appearance by a filmmaker from mainland China since the crisis, personally took home the award for best documentary short.
