Morocco King Appoints Fawzi Lakja as Chairman of 2030 World Cup Committee

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Thursday decided to appoint Fouzi Lajjah, head of the Moroccan Football Federation, as head of the 2030 World Cup team, the Moroccan News Agency reported.

The agency said the appointment came after a vote by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Council, which unanimously approved the cup from Morocco, Spain and Portugal as the sole recommendation to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

He added: “King Mohammed VI was appointed minister responsible for the budget, president of the Moroccan Football Federation and chairman of the 2030 World Cup committee at the Royal Palace in Rabat on Thursday.

He continued: “The King expressed the hope and desire that the organization of this universal demonstration would be driven by a strong ambition based on a plan capable of ensuring the great success of this session.”

Notably, FIFA said in a statement on Wednesday: “The Confederation Council has unanimously agreed that the joint bid of Morocco, Portugal and Spain is the sole bid to host the event in 2030.”

He added: “In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will unite 3 continents and 6 countries, inviting the whole world to celebrate the beautiful and century game and the FIFA World Cup.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “In a divided world, FIFA and football unite. The FIFA Council, which represents the football world, unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup, the first edition of which was held in Uruguay. 1930, more fittingly, as a result, the celebration will be held in South America and three South American countries – Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay – will each host one match for the 2030 World Cup.

He added: “The first of these three matches will certainly take place at the famous Centenario Stadium in Montevideo (Uruguay’s capital) to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup.

The FIFA President continued: “In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, 3 continents – Africa, Europe and South America – and 6 countries – Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay – to welcome and unite the world as they celebrate together. A beautiful game, a century and a World Cup.”
