Official apology after disallowing Liverpool’s goal against Tottenham… and Jurgen Klopp responds: What’s the point?

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — The PGMOL, the body responsible for English soccer’s referees, admitted a mistake was made in Liverpool’s two-goal loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League on Saturday.

In the 34th minute of the game, the referee disallowed Luis Diaz’s goal for the Reds due to offside after a return to VAR technology, angering coach Jurgen Klopp and the club’s supporters as they believed the coach was right.

In an official statement, the PGMOL team confirmed the authenticity of the goal, and pointed out the referee’s error: “We acknowledge that a major human error occurred in the first half of the Tottenham Hotspur-Liverpool match.”

He continued: “Diaz’s goal was disallowed by the match referees on the field for offside. This was a clear factual error…”

The committee responsible for English football referees concluded in a statement: “The committee will fully review the circumstances that led to the error.”

For his part, Klopp said in the official Liverpool club website reports on the PGMOL committee’s report: “How does it help us now?… We don’t get points for this, so it doesn’t help. Nobody expects. To make 100% correct decisions.” “On the pitch, but we all thought it would make things easier when video technology was used.”

The German coach continued: “The decision (to disallow the goal) was taken very quickly. It changed the course of the match, that’s the case. We scored this fantastic goal, goals like that are the ones you can beat. Your opponents.”
