Saudi League deals continue – Brazilian Firmino at Al-Ahly Jeddah

Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino has joined Saudi club Al-Ahli on a three-season deal until the end of June 2026, the club announced on Wednesday.

Firmino ended his contract with Liverpool at the end of last June to move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli on a free transfer deal and finally join the star team of the Saudi professional league, known as the “Roshan League”.

Al-Ahly played in the second division league last season and was promoted back to the Saudi Professional League this season.

Al-Ahly is one of four clubs to become a Saudi public investment fund as part of a plan to privatize Saudi clubs announced last month. The four clubs are Al-Hilal, Al-Nasr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli.

Although the club has not announced the value of Firmino’s annual salary, British media have estimated it at the equivalent of 20 million euros annually, more than twice the salary of players who play with Liverpool.

Firmino becomes the seventh international star to join the Saudi professional league this summer, after Frenchman Karim Benzema and his compatriot N’Kolo Kante from Al-Ittihad, Senegal’s Edouard Mendy who moved to Al-Ahly and his compatriot Khaledo. Heading to Al-Hilal, Coulibaly joins Portugal’s Robin Neves and Croatia’s Marcelo Brozovic in the winning streak.

The arrival of stars extended to coaches after Al-Etifaq Club announced the appointment of English legend Steven Gerrard as its coach. Gerrard was Liverpool’s historic captain and he previously coached Scottish Rangers and English side Aston Villa.

Firmino (31 years old) started his career in Brazil before moving to German side Hoffenheim and from there to Liverpool in 2015. Firmino won every possible title with Liverpool in the European Champions League, European Super Cup and Club. In addition to the World Cup, Premier League titles and the League Cup. FA Cup and Community Shield.

Firmino last joined the Saudi Professional League, continuing the march started by Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to victory last January to open the door to the new format of the Saudi Professional League.

Media expectations still point to more potential transfer deals for international players in the coming days, amid talks by Saudi Professional League clubs with players from major clubs in Europe.
