Japanese striker Miura begins his career in Portugal at the age of 56

Japanese striker Kazuyoshi Miura continued to make history at the age of 56 when he began his career with Portuguese club Olivares.

The former international joined the Portuguese club last February on a season-long loan from Yokohama FC in search of new footballing challenges.

In his 38th season as a professional player, Meura entered injury time with his team leading the academic Di Vizio 4-1.

According to the Portuguese league website, Meura became the “oldest player in Portuguese football” at the age of 56 years, one month and 24 days.

He plays in the sixth country after Brazil, Japan, Italy, Croatia and Australia.

Known as “King Kazuo” in his country, Miura began his professional career with Brazilian club Santos in 1986.

He spent last season on loan from Yokohama FC, playing for local club Suzuka Point Jetters in the fourth division, overseen by his older brother Yasutoshi.

In 2020, Miura became the oldest Japanese player in first division history at 53 years and nine months, before becoming the oldest player to score in a professional match in 2017, surpassing English legend Stanley Matthews.

In September 2020, he also became the oldest player to start a Serie A match.

Miura was one of Asia’s most popular footballers in the 1990s and helped put the game on the map in Japan when the J-League was launched in 1993.
