The iPhone feature enables hackers to unlock stolen iPhones with the intention of siphoning money from users’ bank accounts and prevents victims from finding their stolen devices.
The Wall Street Journal reported today that a feature on the phone called a recovery key is a tool used by hackers to prevent legitimate iPhone owners from accessing their devices. The newspaper reported how Greg Frasca, one of the owners of the iPhone, has been refusing access to his phone since October.
Frasca said he was willing to go to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino and provide proof of identity. He also said he would pay $10,000 to get his iPhone back. Because that phone has pictures of his daughters from last 8 years.
Mr. What happened to Frasca happened to many iPhone users, as thieves stole her iPhone 14 Pro at a bar in Chicago and used her passcode to change her Apple ID password, but they made sure Greg never could. To regain control of the stolen iPhone, activate the recovery key.
Losing your iPhone recovery key can permanently lock your iPhone. The recovery key was introduced by Apple in 2020. When this feature is enabled, a random 28-digit “recovery key” must be provided when the user changes their Apple ID password. But if the iPhone is stolen and in the hands of hackers, activating the recovery key will prevent the owner of the locked phone from gaining access. Without this recovery key and the phone, the user cannot do anything.
“We sympathize with those who have experienced this and take all attacks against our users, no matter how rare, seriously,” an Apple spokesperson said. “We work tirelessly every day to protect our users’ accounts and data. We’re always doing more research to protect against emerging threats like these.”
A security key is generated on iPhones and iPads by following the steps below:
Go to Settings > [اسمك]> Password and security. You may need to enter your Apple ID password.
Press the recovery key.
Scroll to enable recovery key.
Tap Use recovery key and enter your device passcode.
Write down the recovery key and keep it in a safe place.
Confirm by entering your recovery key on the next screen.
Note that when you generate a recovery key, you cannot use Account Recovery to return to your Apple account. With Account Recovery, even if the user doesn’t have enough information to reset their Apple ID password. With Recovery Key, the owner of a stolen or lost iPhone can remotely change their Apple ID password using the recovery key, a trusted phone number and an Apple device, iPhoneArena reported.
