Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who agreed to announce his resignation on July 13 amid a wave of protests in the capital Columba, has left the country by plane, Sri Lankan Immigration Department sources said..

Rajapaksa, his wife and his bodyguard were among the four passengers on board, the sources told “AFP”, adding that the flight was bound for the Maldives..

Thousands of protesters swept through Sri Lanka’s capital. Instead of the planned peaceful rally, the demonstrators broke through the police barricades and took over the presidential palace. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was reportedly evicted shortly before protesters besieged his home.
