Britain’s Queen Elizabeth announced at Buckingham Palace on Monday that she would not attend Tuesday’s parliamentary session due to travel problems, and said her son, Prince Charles, would present the government’s agenda instead.
The 96-year-old British Queen has had to cancel several public engagements since she was admitted to hospital last October due to an undisclosed illness, but she continues to perform many of her duties remotely.
“The Queen has problems with mobility from time to time, and in consultation with her doctors she has reluctantly decided that she will not attend the formal opening ceremony of Parliament tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“At the request of Her Majesty the Queen, with the consent of the relevant authorities, she will deliver the Queen’s address on behalf of the Prince of Cambridge, Prince of Wales.”
The palace refused to provide details about Queen Elizabeth’s illness, but one source said it was related to problems she experienced last year.
The source added that the decision not to attend the opening ceremony of the parliament was taken today.
Britain will hold a four-day celebration next month to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the world’s largest and longest-serving monarch.
