The European Football Association (UEFA) has called an emergency meeting of its executive committee today to discuss the decision to remove the Russian city of St. Petersburg from the right to host the European Champions League final scheduled for May 28 (May 28). )
UEFA was under pressure to snatch the right to run the Russian city after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but the identity of the new city hosting the Continental final is not currently expected to be announced. UEFA will also look for alternatives to venues where Russia prepares to host one or two matches in next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Qatar.
“Following the deteriorating situation between Russia and Ukraine in recent days, the UEFA President has decided to convene an extraordinary session of the Executive Committee (today – Friday) with the aim of assessing the situation, making the necessary decisions and communicating. It will take place after the meeting,” the UEFA statement said.
With Istanbul set to host the final of the 2020 edition, the host city of the Champions League final has been relocated to Lisbon for the past two seasons due to a corona infection. The mini-match, and the final edition of the final edition were held in Porto instead of Istanbul, following the refusal of Manchester City and Chelsea to go to Turkey.
