The U.S. Treasury imposes sanctions on Hezbollah and Lebanese figures

On Tuesday, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on Hezbollah and Lebanon.

The U.S. Treasury Overseas Property Control Office (OFAC) has identified three Hezbollah-linked financial aides and a Lebanese-based travel agency.

In particular, the OFAC has named Adel Diab, Ali Mohammed Town, Jihad Salem Allama and their organization Dar es Salaam Travel and Tourism on the list of restrictions.

The move comes at a time when the Lebanese economy is facing an unprecedented crisis and as part of the Lebanese government, Hezbollah is blocking economic reforms and preventing much-needed change for the Lebanese people, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said Hezbollah’s comprehensive network of financiers helped to exploit Lebanon’s financial resources and escape the current economic crisis.

He explained that through the merchants listed today, Hezbollah receives material and financial assistance through the legal business sector to finance its operations and attempts to destabilize Lebanese political institutions.

“Hezbollah claims to support the Lebanese people, but like other corrupt actors in Lebanon identified by the Treasury, Hezbollah profits from isolated business ventures and backdoor political deals, amassing wealth that the Lebanese people do not see,” he said.
