A jacket worn by the late Princess Diana is expected to fetch more than $50,000 at auction.
A woolen jacket decorated with a flock of white goats, including a black goat, will lead a Sotheby’s online auction in September.
Wear a jacket during a polo match
In June 1981, 19-year-old Diana Spencer wore the jacket to a polo match, shortly after she became engaged to Prince Charles, heir to the British throne.
The image of Princess Diana on this jacket was a big inspiration for designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, who created the jacket for their clothing brand “Warm & Wonderful”. This contributed to introducing the public to their brand and increasing its sales.
A few weeks after wearing it, Muir and Osborne received an official letter from Buckingham Palace saying that Princess Diana’s jacket had a small tear and needed to be repaired or replaced.
The palace returned the basic jacket to the two designers, who sent the princess a new jacket. Diana was photographed wearing white jeans in 1983.
Some have speculated that Diana preferred the “black sheep” style because she felt like an outsider in the royal family.
Emma Corinne wore a replica of the jacket during season four of “The Crown.”
Warm & Wonderful still makes a cotton version of the design, which retails for $250.
Earlier this year, a torn original was found in a box in Ozbezren’s room.
“A well-tailored jacket”
“This exceptional jacket, meticulously preserved, reveals Princess Diana’s whimsy, charm and passion for fashion,” said Cynthia Holden, head of fashion and accessories at Sotheby’s.
Estimated at $50,000 to $80,000, the jacket will be on display at Sotheby’s in New York from September 7 to 13. The online auction will start on August 31 and will continue till September 14.
More recently, Princess Diana’s fashion and accessories have sold for huge sums at auction, including a Victor Edelstein dress that sold for a record $604,800 in January after a bidding war broke out between four potential buyers.
In the same month, Kim Kardashian bought Princess Diana’s “Atalla Cross” necklace for more than $197,000.
